What is a Barrier Island?
Barrier Island: noun
A long broad sandy island lying parallel to a shore that is built up by the action of waves, currents, and winds and that protects the shore from the effects of the ocean.
The Outer Banks provide a sheltered environment that enables marshes and estuaries to form behind them despite large storms. Just as Pine Island Sound or JN “Ding” Darling is protected by the mangroves and barrier island of Sanibel/Captiva allowing it to become one of the most successful environmental protection areas in Florida.

Fishing the jetties in Buxton with the lighthouse as a back drop, or Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills are some of my most cherished memories.
